Congress orders pass-through changes

The Department of Health and Human Services will determine new criteria for Medicare pass-through payment categories. Last month, Congress ordered changes in the way Medicare reimbursements are administered for certain types of new technology that weren't fully addressed under the new outpatient prospective payment system. The new criteria will not include using brand names, officials said.

Groups call for 'unsafe' needle ban

The Food and Drug Administration said it would consider a petition calling for the immediate ban of certain sharps devices that can cause healthcare worker injuries. The petition was filed by a consumer advocacy group, Private Citizen, and the nation's largest healthcare workers union, Service Employees International Union, which has led the push for safe needle laws
