under pressure: Caring for decubitus ulcersA recent report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) declared that hospital stays of patients with pressure ulcers are on the rise, even as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services included the condition on the list of "never events" it no longer will reimburse unless healthcare facilities can prove it was unavoidable. So now the pressure is on for clinicians to perform. |

Get sharp about safety measures
No discussion of needlestick injury trends would be complete without considering the impact of the U.S. Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act of 2000, which mandated the use of safety-engineered sharp devices. The legislation also prompted the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to revise its Bloodborne Pathogens standard in 2001, strengthening requirements for employers to identify and make use of effective and safer medical devices. Despite
recession, CS/SPD salaries surge, job security remains steady
The past year or so may have proved fiscally challenging for many of the nation’s healthcare organizations, but it appears that some central service professionals haven’t felt the pinch – or at least not as much as might be suspected, according to HPN’s latest CS/SPD salary survey. In fact, average salaries climbed more than 7 percent across the board after dipping last year, following a consistent pattern of yearly increases since 2000. |
