IAHCSMM Annual Meeting to uncover new educational offerings by Julie E. Williamson C alifornia, the Golden State, is host to the 2010 IAHCSMM Annual Meeting, and the conference – held in sunny San Diego May 1-5 – promises to shine with the widest array of educational programs and offerings to date.Kicking off the meeting will be the second annual pre-conference workshops. These hands-on labs will cover a wide range of topics, including: hip, knee and back instruments; power instruments; flexible scopes, instrument inspection, sterilization standards; inspection and cleaning of laparoscopic instrumentation; cleaning of difficult instruments; IAHCSMM chapter development; inservice and staff meeting planning; mandatory certification; and IAHCSMM website navigation. The meeting will also feature the well-attended Early Bird Discussion Forums (covering supply distribution/inventory management; effecting departmental change; CSSD leadership; instrumentation care; instrument tracking; and AAMI Standards – ST79), as well as 20 timely educational sessions for new and seasoned technicians and managers – all taught by some of the leading experts in the field. San Diego meeting attendees will also have access to two new educational offerings: Exhibit Learning Annexes and poster presentations. With the addition of the Exhibit Learning Annexes, registered attendees and vendor experts will come together in a private, enclosed room on the exhibit floor for 20-30-minute educational or product/service demonstrations. These sessions (16 in all) will be hosted at numerous time slots to allow for greater attendee participation. The poster presentations will be on display in the exhibit hall, as well, and will afford a unique opportunity for IAHCSMM members and meeting attendees to share their success stories, study data and process improvements. The meeting will also unveil IAHCSMM’s new CS Leadership Manual, as well as the follow-up DVD to IAHCSMM’s 2005 video release: Today’s CS Industry: Instrumental to Patient Care. The new video will visually capture how patient care, quality and safety all begin with the CSSD, while also demonstrating the CSSD’s place within the healthcare continuum and IAHCSMM’s critical role in promoting CSSD quality, professionalism and leadership through certification and ongoing education. Beyond that, IAHCSMM’s Annual Meeting will reveal a series of four disinfection- and sterilization-related educational training videos geared toward CSSD and Operating Room professionals. The 10-15-minute videos, developed in partnership with healthcare training video producer Envision Inc., will address General Orientation/Overview of Cleaning, High-Level Disinfection and Sterilization of Surgical Instruments, Medical Devices and Equipment; Cleaning of Instruments and Devices Prior to High-Level Disinfection and Sterilization; High-Level Disinfection; and Sterilization.
