NCC Group Report: Surge in Cyber Threats Targeting Healthcare Sector

May 1, 2025
NCC Group's report reveals a 21% surge in ransomware attacks on healthcare sector in 2024, with industry becoming a prime target for cybercriminals and nation-state actors.

On April 28, NCC Group published a new report that found the healthcare sector is facing a worrying increase in cyber threats. A press release on the report noted that the industry has become a target for organized crime groups and nation-state actors.

The report found that in 2024, ransomware attacks on the healthcare sector surged to 550 incidents—a 21% increase from 2023 and over triple the number in 2022. Healthcare remains among the top five most targeted industries, with RansomHub and LockBit 3.0 leading the attacks.

Despite rising threats, only 40% of healthcare organizations train non-IT staff in cybersecurity, leaving them vulnerable to phishing and social engineering. The sector’s dependence on outdated technology further increases risks, potentially compromising patient care through delays, data breaches, and identity theft.
