HHS Announces Actions to Increase Supply of Mpox Vaccine

Sept. 26, 2024
The U.S. government has committed to making over a million combined doses of mpox vaccines available to serve the global mpox response.

HHS has announced actions to “increase the supply of mpox vaccine, supporting the U.S. Government commitment to make over a million combined doses of mpox vaccines available to the global mpox response.”

The new actions being taken by HHS are donations of “1,000,000 doses to the international mpox response. The United States has also committed to provide at least $500 million to support the mpox response, aligned with the WHO and Africa CDC Joint Response Plan.” Plus, the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) is “also loaning JYNNEOS manufacturer Bavarian Nordic 200,000 doses of ASPR-procured vaccine to ensure continued supply within the domestic commercial market.”

In addition, “ASPR is collaborating with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to make JYNNEOS that may otherwise expire available to HRSA funded health centers and Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program Part C and D clinics.” These new actions come in tandem with previous donations to countries such as the DRC and Nigeria.

At this time, “the risk to the general public in the United States from clade I mpox is low, and there are no known cases in the United States. However, clade II mpox infections continue to occur across the United States and HHS remains focused on rapidly deploying mpox vaccines and therapeutics to those communities most impacted, while maintaining a focus on fair and equitable distribution of the product both domestically and abroad.”
