The measles outbreak in South Carolina continues to grow, as case numbers are now at 876. CIDRAP has the news.

Last time HPN reported on the South Carolina measles outbreak, cases were at 789; that was one week ago, on Jan. 28. The outbreak has shown practically no signs of slowing. Additionally, another case was confirmed in Sumter County, South Carolina, and it is unclear if that case is linked to the current outbreak, centered in Spartanburg County, or if the case “may have been exposed where measles is occurring in other locations.”

Most of the new cases reported over the last week are “close case contacts, but multiple sites of public exposure are listed on the [Department of Public Health] website, including restaurants and grocery stores in Sumter County.”

Among the confirmed cases, “800 case-patients are unvaccinated against measles.” About two-thirds of the cases have occurred in patients ages 5 to 17. 96% of the cases in the state are in Spartanburg County. The new case in Sumter County is concerning because it is in a different region of the state from where the outbreak is centered.
