Kenya Reports Second Death From Ebola

Meanwhile, the outbreak in the DRC is almost at 10,000 cases, and the case fatality rate remains near 50%.

Key Highlights

  • Kenya’s second Ebola death was a close relative of the index patient who had been quarantined.
  • Seven confirmed patients in Kenya remain in isolation; no additional cases have been reported.
  • Nigeria’s sole reported patient was airlifted to Switzerland in stable condition, and a team is investigating her infection.
  • The DRC has reported 9,964 cases and 4,841 deaths amid attacks on health workers.

Officials in Kenya reported the country’s second death from the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. CIDRAP has the news.

The woman was a close relative of the country’s index patient and had been under quarantine when she died. She began showing symptoms of infection ten days prior to her death.

Seven positive patients, all of whom were exposed to the virus via the index patient, remain in isolation units in Kenya. No new cases have been reported other than those. 118 of 135 identified contacts of that first patient have been placed in quarantine.

Nigeria has also reported a case of Ebola, and the patient was airlifted in stable condition to Switzerland. A team is being sent to Nigeria to investigate how she became infected. She is the only Ebola patient in the country so far, but she had no travel to the DRC reported in her travel itinerary. She is a Ugandan woman married to a Swiss national who works in Kenya; the Ugandan airport, where the index patient in Kenya traveled, may have been the scene of transmission.

Meanwhile, the outbreak in the DRC has caused 9,964 cases and 4,841 deaths. A nurse was killed and a health worker was attacked in Tshopo province in the country as tensions continue to mount.
