AACN issues awards to distinguished and pioneering clinicians

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) honored a number of their nurses at the 2021 National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition, held virtually this year.

They announced:

Meredith Mealer, PhD, RN, and Marc Moss, MD, from the University of Colorado, received the 2021 AACN Pioneering Spirit Award for their collaborative research on nurses’ mental health, which led to increased awareness of burnout syndrome and PTSD. This award, one of AACN’s Visionary Leadership awards, recognizes significant contributions that influence progressive and critical care nursing and relate to the association’s mission, vision and values.

Norma Metheny, PhD, RN, FAAN, received the 2020 Marguerite Rodgers Kinney Award for a Distinguished Career for her pioneering research and its far-reaching impact beyond nursing practice into health policy, resulting in improved patient care protocols and clinical innovation. 

Rose Sherman, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, CNL, FAAN, an early proponent for nurses to have leadership roles throughout healthcare organizations, received the AACN Pioneering Spirit Award for her dedication to the development and advancement of nurse leaders. This AACN Visionary Leadership Award recognizes significant contributions that influence acute and critical care nursing and relate to the association’s mission, vision and values.

Linda D. Scott, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FNAP, FAAN received the AACN Pioneering Spirit award for her research on nurse fatigue, loss of sleep and inability to recover between shifts provides scientific evidence to support better nurse staffing and fatigue management. This AACN Visionary Leadership Award recognizes significant contributions that influence acute and critical care nursing and relate to the association’s mission, vision and values.

Alison Moëd, MSN, BSN, RN, and Cliff Morrison, MSM, MSN, RN, ACRN, FAAN created the San Francisco Model, a patient-centered approach that emphasizes touch, patient autonomy regarding care decisions and a broader perspective of family. They received the AACN Visionary Leadership Award which recognizes significant contributions that influence acute and critical care nursing and relate to the association’s mission, vision and values.
