Baxter's 2026 Connected Hospital Report Highlights Technology Gaps

Baxter's inaugural 2026 Connected Hospital Report reveals a significant gap between hospitals' technology investments and their perceived value.

Key Highlights

  • 89% of hospital leaders see technology as essential for future growth, but only 53% believe they are maximizing its impact.
  • Automation adoption varies widely, from 18% in early-stage hospitals to 72% in leading organizations, indicating room for growth.
  • Major barriers include security risks and workforce adoption, underscoring the need for comprehensive implementation strategies.

Baxter released its inaugural 2026 Connected Hospital Report, based on a survey of 150 U.S. IT and nursing leaders. The findings highlight a gap between technology investment and perceived value: 89% say technology is essential to future growth, but only 53% believe their hospitals are maximizing its impact.

Operational efficiency, workflow automation and data integration emerged as leading priorities. Automation adoption ranged from 18% among hospitals classified as early-stage to 72% among leading organizations. Security risks and workforce adoption remain major barriers, while 95% of respondents say future innovation requires stronger integration among IT systems, medical devices and software.

The findings suggest purchasing and value analysis teams should assess how new technology connects with existing systems, supports staff workflows, and produces measurable benefits. Integration costs, cybersecurity, training, and implementation support belong in purchasing decisions alongside product capabilities. The survey reflects leaders’ perceptions rather than independently verified clinical or financial outcomes.
