Nearly 9,000 COVID-19 cases hit Tampa area schools

The Hillsborough County School Board will hold an Emergency School Board Meeting on Wednesday, August 18, from 1-3:30 p.m. in the School Board Auditorium. Board Members will meet to discuss the latest district COVID-19 impact and will discuss the best way to mitigate against the spread of the virus, up to and including mandatory face coverings for all students and staff.

The Hillsborough County School Board has called an emergency meeting for Wednesday to discuss COVID-19 cases among teachers and students. With just one week back in the classroom, the school board dashboard reports that 8,400 students and 307 employees in Hillsborough County are in isolation or quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19 or coming into close contact with someone who tested positive.

As of 7 a.m. Monday, 5,599 students and 316 employees in Hillsborough County Public Schools are in isolation or quarantine. Isolation refers to individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19 while quarantine refers to those who have had close contact with a positive case. 

The school system has a COVID-19 case dashboard that reports daily cases.
