New spirometer designed for easy detection and management of respiratory illnesses

Sept. 3, 2020

Midmark Corp. announced the launch of the Midmark Digital Spirometer, designed to make the detection and management of asthma, COPD and other respiratory illnesses simple and effective.

“Asthma is one of the costliest diseases in the United States. Likewise, it is estimated that COPD will cost $49 million in 2020—strikingly, 75 percent of the cost is preventable,” said Kurt Forsthoefel, director of medical marketing, Midmark. “Our new digital spirometer offers a simple, effective way to make testing and management of asthma, COPD and other pulmonary diseases a routine part of the patient care strategy.”

Asthma and COPD have no cure and resulting damage to the lungs cannot be reversed. However, with early detection using spirometry, caregivers can help patients feel better and stay active while slowing disease progression. The ability to perform basic spirometry testing is critical in primary care facilities today.

The Midmark Digital Spirometer equips caregivers with the technology needed for early detection and management of asthma and COPD in patients. Spirometry testing is the most effective and common method for diagnosing COPD; it is also the recommended test for confirming asthma. Spirometry also can support disease management decisions and provide indication of how well treatments are working.

The  spirometer works with today’s electronic medical records (EMR) systems for improved clinical workflow. The spirometry software will learn as it is used, intelligently populating patient race, age, sex and height (RASH) information from the EMR, then transferring test data back into the EMR to reduce transcription errors and missing reports. The spirometer utilizes the GOLD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease) classification for the diagnosis and management of COPD.

Technician and patient coaching videos, including patient demonstrations and testing techniques, are accessible directly from the main testing screen in the spirometer software (IQmanager) to help standardize training and improve test results.
