Piedmont Announces $600M Investment for New Piedmont Newton Hospital

The proposed project involves relocating the aging 128-bed hospital to better serve Newton County, east of Atlanta.

Key Highlights

  • Piedmont Healthcare plans to fund the nearly $600 million relocation of Piedmont Newton Hospital, its second-largest capital project.
  • The current hospital, built in 1954, is landlocked and limits further development, prompting the move to better serve a growing community.
  • The project aims to expand access and modernize facilities, with details on the new site, bed count, and construction schedule to be announced later.

Piedmont Healthcare has filed a Letter of Determination with Georgia regulators for a nearly $600 million relocation of Piedmont Newton Hospital in Covington, Ga. Piedmont says it would fund the entire project. If built, it would be the system’s second-largest capital project, behind the Marcus Tower at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital.

The current hospital was built in 1954 and is licensed for 128 beds. Piedmont says its aging, landlocked campus limits further development. The system has already invested $70 million in the hospital and local services since partnering with Newton Medical Center in 2015. In fiscal 2026, Piedmont Newton recorded nearly 8,000 inpatient admissions and more than 52,000 visits to its 32-bed emergency department. Piedmont positions the relocation to expand access as Newton County and communities east of Atlanta grow. The announcement does not specify the new hospital’s bed count, site, or construction schedule.

A hospital replacement gives Piedmont a chance to design clinical space and support operations together, from emergency and surgical capacity to equipment, IT, pharmacy, sterile processing, and internal logistics. For purchasing leaders, the consequential decisions will include which assets can move, which systems must be replaced, how vendors will be selected, and how supplies and services will transition without interrupting care.
