APIC and Leapfrog Group Joint Statement on the Importance of IPC in Healthcare

May 28, 2025
Amid staffing shortages and infectious threats, APIC and Leapfrog Group stress the critical need for continued investment in infection prevention and control (IPC) to sustain progress in reducing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).

On May 28, APIC and The Leapfrog Group issued a joint statement stressing that healthcare leaders must not reduce their commitment to infection prevention and control (IPC) and patient safety, especially given the current challenges of preventable harm, infectious threats, staffing shortages, and complex care. They are alarmed by reports of cuts to IPC resources, warning such actions endanger patient safety and undermine recent progress.

Leapfrog’s latest data shows healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) have declined since the COVID-19 peak, thanks to strong IPC programs. Sustaining this progress requires continued investment. APIC and Leapfrog urge CEOs, boards, and policymakers to view IPC not as a cost, but as a strategic necessity for quality care and operational resilience.

They call on healthcare leaders to double down on IPC efforts and recognize infection preventionists as vital to protecting lives and ensuring safe, effective healthcare.
